Target Audience:  Licensed/Certified Medical Professional (i.e. PT, OT, Physician, Nurse), Rehab Professional (ATP, SMS, CRTS), Reimbursement & Billing Specialists

Course Description:   This course will look at common neurological presentations related to those living with a stroke or traumatic brain injury. The focus will be on the population that is more severe in diagnosis that are seen for complex seating and mobility needs along the rehabilitation process. We will discuss a brief overview of CVA and TBI presentation and functional impacts that may happen to their motor, visual, sensory, and vestibular system that could impact positioning. A brief discussion will be had on unique considerations for positioning components based on this population’s needs and what options exist to meet those needs. This course will look at the mobility algorithm for appropriately selecting a mobility device that helps a client be as independent, safe, and timely to perform MRADLs while focusing on the literature. We will review unique considerations when it comes to concerns of visual field and what literature shows that helps for assessing and training individuals with unilateral neglect and other impacts from CVA/TBI. When looking at power mobility this class will outline unique, literature based, recommendations for training those new to power mobility for optimal success. We will also describe the options available for drive controls along with consideration of programming features for optimal safety. This class will look at common barriers including transportation and understanding the purpose of power seat functions to optimize physiological and functional outcomes when appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify a minimum of 3 postural abnormalities that could develop as a complication after CVA/TBI.
  2. Describe at least 2 key differences among mobility base selection and their functional impact.
  3. Distinguish at least 2 key training principles in the literature to implement when working on power mobility with a post CVA end user.

Pre-requisites:  None

Agenda:

  • Hour 1
  • Review of incidence and prevalence in CVA/TBI cases along with common complications
  • Discussion of postural considerations and presentation after CVA/TBI and how to address these utilizing various positioning devices
  • Review the algorithmic approach to wheelchair selection including review of tilt in space, manual, and power mobility devices
  • Discuss unique positioning and mobility considerations for those that present with hemiplegia, hemiparesis, and unilateral neglect

  • Hour 2 (30 Minutes)
  • Describe ways to assess for appropriate trial of power mobility along with ways to structure training based on the literature
  • Discuss drive control selection and programming safety features for optimal success along with case study representation
