Title:  Maintaining Independence: Progressive Diagnoses and Mobility Considerations (1hr)

Course Code:  DIA0625h-1

0.1 AOTA CEUs/1.0 Contact Hours

Target Audience:  Licensed/Certified Medical Professional (i.e. PT, OT), Rehab Professional (ATP, SMS, CRTS), Reimbursement & Billing Specialists

Course Description:   This course will look at common progressive degenerative presentations related to those living with muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. The focus will be on the population that is further along in diagnosis that are seen for complex seating and mobility needs along the rehabilitation process. We will discuss a brief overview of each diagnoses presentation and functional impacts that may happen to their motor, cognitive, and musculoskeletal system that could impact positioning. A brief discussion will be had on unique considerations for positioning components based on this population’s needs and what options exist to meet those needs. This course will look at the mobility algorithm for appropriately selecting a mobility device that helps a client be as independent, safe, and timely to perform MRADLs while focusing on the literature. We will review unique considerations when it comes to concerns of falls and maintaining mobility independence with what literature shows can help for assessing and training individuals with degenerative conditions. When looking at power mobility this class will outline unique, literature based, recommendations for those new to power mobility for optimal success. We will also describe the options available for drive controls along with consideration of programming features for optimal safety. This class will look at common barriers including transportation and understanding the purpose of power seat functions to optimize physiological and functional outcomes when appropriate.

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

1.      Correctly identify a minimum of 3 postural asymmetries that may be present in the population with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or muscular dystrophy.

2.      Describe at least 2 key power mobility seat functions and their functional impact on activities of daily living as they relate to diagnose with disease progression.

3.      Recall 3 potential functional changes that could impact ADL independence in relation to degenerative disease and the consideration for complex rehabilitation technologies.

Title:  Mobility Considerations for Spinal Cord Injury (1hr)

Course Code:  DIA0923h-1

0.1 AOTA CEUs/1 Contact Hours

Target Audience:  Licensed/Certified Medical Professional (i.e. PT, OT), Rehab Professional (ATP, SMS, CRTS)

Course Description:
Assessing an end user for appropriate mobility solutions can be an intimidating task. Decisions that are made will have an impact on the individual’s quality of life, functional mobility, physical well-being, and social interactions. This task can seem even more complex when you are working with clients that might require advanced seating and positioning along with potential for alternative drive controls and customized programming. Those with a spinal cord injury many times are dependent on optimal seating and mobility solutions to enable optimal functional independence in their daily routines. This course will discuss the characteristics and decision-making process for those post spinal cord injury, as well as the special considerations on power mobility and alternative drive control intervention. Current and relevant research will be discussed as it relates to assessment, and decision making for the appropriate mobility solution that provides safe, timely, and independent mobility maximizing the potential for and end users’ quality of life in all roles and activities of daily living.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

1.      Discuss spinal cord injury levels C1-C8 functional implications related to mobility and seating selection for optimal independence.

2.      Identify 3 areas of physical/functional impact that inappropriate assessment and prescription of seating and mobility selections can have on those post SCI.

3.      Compare 3 alternative drive control options that would maximize independence in activities of daily living for those with a spinal cord injury.

Pre-requisites:  Basic understanding of mobility algorithm and basic knowledge of group 3 power mobility

Agenda:

Hour 1

  • Review of C1-C8 spinal cord injury anatomy and functional movement patterns. Application of movement and function to mobility device selection. Review of cases with specific examples of alternative drive controls and seating considerations based on client presentation for maximal functional independence. Review of cushion and backrest considerations when matching to a client’s mobility needs.

Title:  Power Mobility and Cerebral Palsy: One Size Fits Few (1hr)

Course Code:  DIA0125h-1

0.1 AOTA CEUs/1 Contact Hours

Target Audience:  Licensed/Certified Medical Professional (i.e. PT, OT), Rehab Professional (ATP, SMS, CRTS)

Course Description:
Assessing an end user for power mobility can be an intimidating task. Decisions that are made will have an impact on the individual’s quality of life, functional mobility, physical well-being, and social interactions. This task can seem even more daunting when it comes to the pediatric end user. Children have the natural desire to move, explore, and learn. Research has shown that there is a strong correlation between self-initiated mobility and the development of visual, cognitive, social, language, and perceptual skills. This course will discuss the characteristics and decision-making process for children with CP, as well as the special considerations on early power mobility intervention. Current and relevant research will be discussed as it relates to assessment, timing, and outcomes when early power mobility is recommended and prescribed for those that demonstrate the needs.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

1.      Differentiate the unique considerations that are involved when assessing children with CP for the appropriate mobility device.

2.      Distinguish 2 motor/functional presentations that would make power mobility  assessment and trial most appropriate.

3.      Identify 2 positive outcomes supported in the evidence for early mobility intervention specific to children with CP.

Pre-requisites:  None

Agenda:

Hour 1

  • Introduction, review of Gross Motor Function Classification System, literature review of early power mobility considerations and outcomes for those with CP
  • Power Mobility Case Study Review and Parent Feedback

Course Level:  Beginner / Review

Instructional Methods:  Lecture, Discussion

0.1 AOTA CEUs/1 Contact Hours
Target Audience:  Licensed/Certified Medical Professional (i.e. PT, OT), Rehab Professional (ATP, SMS, CRTS), Reimbursement & Billing Specialists

Course Description:   More than one third of the population of the United States is considered obese. Obesity-related medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke all lead to various levels of mobility impairment which leads the bariatric consumer seeking mobility aides and equipment such as wheeled mobility as an alternative mobility approach to ambulation. Along with the secondary medical complications listed above, traumatic injuries and neuromuscular disorders such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, muscular dystrophies, etc. that also present requiring equipment with higher weight capacities, pose multiple issues for the evaluator when going through the patient/product match. This course will discuss commonalties of the bariatric wheeled mobility user while distinguishing the unique seating and positioning challenges that presents with the bariatric client.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

1.      Distinguish the unique challenges that bariatric clients pose when recommending a positioning support system.

2.      Apply 3 possible seating and mobility interventions based on evaluation findings.
